Abstract:

In 2008 I had the opportunity to visit the Vänersborg Museum to see the exquisite southern African bird collection of Axel Wilhelm Eriksson, with the exception of one bird, the Bat Hawk Machaerhampus alcinus anderssonii. Peter Johansson, in his book "The Trader King of Damaraland", quotes Axel Eriksson writing: "My much discussed South African bird collection should be handed over as a gift from me to the Vänersborg Museum. However, the collection should exclude the extremely rare Machaerhampus Anderssonii as being too great a rarity to be kept in a small country museum". The bird was to be donated to the Riksmuseet in Stockholm as a gift from Axel Eriksson. Our next visit to Sweden came up in May 2009 and I was delighted that Stockholm was included in the itinerary. I immediately started making arrangements to visit the museum in my free time to see the bird. By means of the wonders of the internet and some e-mails the correct museum, 1 of the 72 in Stockholm, was identified.
