Conservation Status: Near Threatened; Southern African Range: Namibia, south-eastern Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe; Area of Occupancy: 630,000 km2; Population Estimate: 500 to 1,000 pairs; Population Trend: Fluctuates over time, stable to slightly declining; Habitat: Nama Karoo and arid savannahs with escarpments and broken, rocky mountainous terrain associated with hyrax; Threats: Persecution by farmers, drowning in farm dams.
