Public access to information is a vital component of ensuring community engagement in prevalent issues. Wildlife crime is one of the pressing environmental issues of our time.

Wildlife crime investigations are generally covert operations requiring utmost confidentiality to succeed. Investigations and prosecutions in complex cases may take months or even years to complete. For this reason, the information that can be released to the public without compromising cases is often limited. Nonetheless, the Namibian government strives to share as much information as possible with the public.

The Namibian media has welcomed this approach and regularly publishes statistics and feature articles on wildlife crime. These are entered into the database at regular intervals, creating a comprehensive archive of wildlife crime reporting in Namibia.

Kruger K 2024. Alleged habitual poacher shot, killed.

An alleged habitual poacher was shot and killed over the weekend by a truck driver, whom he reportedly tried to rob. Ashley 'Luxman' Eiseb was allegedly shot at the Oosland abattoir in the Gobabis district last Friday after he smashed the window of a truck in an attempt to rob the driver. According to recent media reports, he was shot in the chest during the incident. He then fled in a vehicle with a group of other suspects, but the car ran out of fuel near Omitara. Three individuals were allegedly found with the vehicle.

Kruger K 2024. Ex-cop fails to overturn 'poaching' dismissal.

A former Namibian Police inspector charged with conspiracy to commit rhino poaching has failed in his challenge against a decision that he is unfit to serve on the force. Wersimus Haipa approached the Windhoek High Court and argued that his dismissal was "illegal" and "unfair". He demanded that he be reinstated and that the safety and security ministry compensate him for the salaries he would have received had he not been fired. Haipa was a member of the Namibian Police for 26 years before he was fired in September 2021 based on criminal charges against him.

Mensah E 2023. Tanzania amplifies charges in wildlife trafficking case amidst global concerns.

The Tanzanian government has added a charge of money laundering to an economic sabotage case involving three defendants accused of smuggling 164 snakes, lizards, and chameleons without a permit. The accused, Eric Ayo, Ally Ringo, and Aziz Ndago, allegedly transported these wildlife assets valued at Sh20 million, violating local law. Now, instead of the previous two charges, the defendants will face three, with the third one, money laundering, solely targeting Ayo. He is supposed to have committed this crime on January 26, 2021, at the CRBD Bank in Msamvu, Morogoro.

Naidoo S 2023. Elephant shot eight times during 'unlawful' hunt at Limpopo game reserve.

A male elephant was shot eight times during a trophy hunt before eventually succumbing to its injuries on 3 September 2023. Humane Society International is now looking at the legal options it can pursue. The animal welfare group said the issuing of the permit by Limpopo to hunt the animal was unlawful because of an court interdict in place. "The elephant suffered through eight gunshots over an extended period of time before finally succumbing to his injuries.
