Abstract:

The generic classification of Southern African Vermileonidae is revised in the light of a new cladistic analysis of the lineages present. Most of the species formerly included in Lampromyia Macquart 1835, are transferred to a new genus for which the name Leptynoma Westwood 1876, is retrieved from synonymy. Leptynoma is divided into the subgenera Leptynoma s. str. with four species, and Perianthomyia subgen. n. with two species. As a result, Lampromyia becomes a genus primarily of the south-western Palaearctic Region, with a clade of three species in eastern Southern Africa. The new species Leptynoma (Perianthomyia) phantasma sp. n. (Namibia) and Lampromyia rebecca sp. n. (Zimbabwe) are descriptionbed. Keys are provided to genera, subgenera and species, and new records are given for previously known species. Keywords: Diptera, Leptynoma Westwood, Southern Africa fauna, Vermileonidae, Wormlion.
