The large amount of water that could be collected in Namutoni in our scenario provides further evidence of the potential for the use of rainwater harvesting technology at tourist resorts in areas of Namibia with significant rainfall. This water could be used to wash clothes or irrigate green areas within the resort, thus removing some pressure from other sources of water. In order for the water to be stored, various smaller tanks could be used to provide enough storage volume to fully exploit the abundant water resources during the wet season and keep the water for use during the dry season. We have also explored the idea of using the water to maintain a garden on site. Although our example for a garden was greatly simplified it is clear that from a purely hydrological perspective it is possible to benefit from locally grown produce at tourist resorts. There are both ecological and economical benefits associated with this idea, such as a reduction in CO2 emissions as a result of cutting transport distance.
