Abstract:

Book Review: J. Solway (2006)(ed). The politics of egalitarianism: Theory and practice. This section includes Trigger's essay on debates about the natural or social nature of egalitarianism, recalling Lee's work on how hierarchical behaviour is actively suppressed in hunter-gatherer societies through gossip, ridicule, and accusations of witchcraft. Trigger concludes that hunter-gatherer societies cannot be a model for the future creation of egalitarian societies, rather only an example of the possibility of social and political egalitarianism in societies small enough to be controlled by public opinion.
