Abstract:

African Penguins Spheniscus demersus currently breed on six islands and one mainland site in Namibia. Four of the islands are considered global Important Bird Areas (IBAs) (Barnes 1998) and support 97% of the Namibian penguin population. Three of these, namely Mercury, Ichaboe and Possession islands, are permanently staffed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, while the fourth, Halifax Island, is visited once a week.
