Title:
Assessment of the impact of bush encroachment and bush control on soil organic carbon in Namibia
Publication Year:
2024
Abstract:

The background and objective of this SOC study are clearly outlined in the National Strategy on the Sustainable Management of Bush Resources 2022-2027 (cp. MEFT 2022: 33, 43-44, 61, 64): Investigating the impact of the different bush control methods on climate change and climate change mitigation with a particular focus on the aspect of carbon sequestration by the soil. A Green House Gas (GHG) assessment conducted for Namibia and Namibia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and several studies assume a positive impact on soil organic carbon. However, a detailed study with soil measurements in different areas and under different bush management regimes must be conducted to assess the impact of bush control on soil organic carbon and inform the promotion of measures that enhance carbon sequestration. Bush control has a significant adaptation potential by increasing land productivity, food security, groundwater recharge, biodiversity, and enhancing livelihoods through bush biomass utilisation and value addition.
