Title:

Environmental Scoping Report for the proposed ASK Namibia 2019 2D Seismic Survey covering the Walvis and Namibe Basins, Offshore Central and Northern Namibia, prepared for GeoPartners Limited, United Kingdom

Publication Year:
2019
Abstract:

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia, (NAMCOR) have signed an agreement with GeoPartners Ltd UK (the Proponent) to undertake 2D offshore seismic survey covering the Walvis Basin (central offshore Namibia) and the Namibe Basin (Namibian northern offshore up to the Angolan boarder). The overall aim of the proposed survey named Aptian Source Kitchen (ASK) Namibia 2019 2D seismic survey is to map the entire length of the Aptian Source Kitchen of the Aptian geological interval extending from -200m into the deep water (averaging -3000 m). The Aptian which is an age in the geologic timescale or a stage in the stratigraphic column, is an important potential source rock for Namibian oil and gas exploration efforts. Although offshore seismic survey activities in Namibia dates back to the late 1960s, a lot more still need to be done in order to have a full understanding of the geology and associated active petroleum systems offshore Namibia. The data sets from the proposed ASK Namibia 2019 2D survey will provide critical insights into the subsurface geologic evolution, offshore basin architecture, depositional and structural setting with respect to possible active petroleum systems in both the Walvis and Namibe Basins.
