Title:

APP-001626: The renewal of the environmental clearance certificate for the telecommunication transmitter mast at the Husab Mine

Publication Year:
2020
Abstract:

Renewal Application: Continue operating the telecommunication transmitter mast (i.e. cell phone tower) to ensure effective communication for Swakop Uranium’s activities at the Husab Mine plant complex. Swakop Uranium required a telecommunication transmitter mast (i.e. cell phone mast) in order to meet communication requirements at their Husab Mine. As part of the original Husab Mine EIA and the EIA Amendment process, a 30 m high cell phone mast was described and assessed for radio and cell-phone communication repeaters to be installed on site near the plant complex. In September 2013 the Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) for the Husab Mine EIA Amendment was issued by MET. Swakop Uranium subsequently applied for an increase in the height of the mast, up to 60 m. In July 2014, an ECC was issued for an increase in height of the mast from the 30 m to 60 m. This ECC was renewed in September 2017. Swakop Uranium continues to use the tower for communication. No further activities associated with the tower are planned.
