The study of nitrate concentrations in South and southern Africa is not a new subject, with the publication of a nitrate distribution map in 2001. However, these studies were constrained by the amount of data obtained, GIS software and computer processing power, making it difficult to determine the levels of and extent to which nitrate occurs.
