Title:

Survey of northwest Namibia, Oct 2000: Summary of results

Publication Year:
2000
Abstract:

An aerial sample survey of wildlife and livestock in Khorixas and Opuwo districts took place 5.10.00 and 13.10.00. The MET Cessna 206, V5-PRO, was used, crewed by J. Eckermann (Pilot), A. Katangala, J. Awiseb, B. So-Oabeb (Observers), S. Gawiseb and B. Manuel (recorders). The MET Piper cub, V5-DSH, was piloted by GC Craig while N. Howoseb and S. Uri-kob (SRT) alternated as observers. The main objectives were to update the elephant estimates for the areas, to obtain estimates for other wildlife and for livestock. Methods were standard. The area was devided up into strata (see map). Both transect and block sampling was carried out in the strata as indicated. All species seen were recorded. Results are given in the accompanying table. Estimates from the 1988 survey are given for comparison, these include only 1998 strata within Khorixas and Opuwo districts. Livestock figures are not comparable for the two years because large areas with livestock were excluded from the 1998 survey. Wildlife figures are broadley comparable between the two years, but estimates are generally up. Note that differences are not necessarily statistically significant, and could also be due to changes in conditions, eg. sighting conditions could have been better, resulting in overall increased estimates.
