Public access to information is a vital component of ensuring community engagement in prevalent issues. Wildlife crime is one of the pressing environmental issues of our time.
Wildlife crime investigations are generally covert operations requiring utmost confidentiality to succeed. Investigations and prosecutions in complex cases may take months or even years to complete. For this reason, the information that can be released to the public without compromising cases is often limited. Nonetheless, the Namibian government strives to share as much information as possible with the public.
The Namibian media has welcomed this approach and regularly publishes statistics and feature articles on wildlife crime. These are entered into the database at regular intervals, creating a comprehensive archive of wildlife crime reporting in Namibia.

Anecdotal evidence from Kruger National Park often suggests the south of the park offers better lion viewing than the north. Some of the best Kruger lion sightings occur in the Satara-Skukuza region. But is this merely a matter of terrain, lion density, road geography or luck? Or does it reflect lower lion numbers in Kruger's northern areas? A recent survey by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has provided fresh insight into Kruger National Park's northern lion population.

What is being touted as the largest, most comprehensive count of African lions in Uganda has painted a grim picture in some areas and a marked hope for others. That is according to a report by three of the lead participants in the survey carried out by more than 100 Ugandan and international collaborators, driving over 26,000km and recording 7,516 camera trap nights from 232 locations spanning a year from January 2022 to January 2023.

Police at Lulekani under the Mopani District are investigating a case of illegal poaching of protected wild animals, in an incident where two lions and a zebra were killed. An injured hyena was rescued after it was caught up in a wire snare, in the incident which happened at Genoeg Camp inside Letaba Ranch on Sunday around midnight.

Two men, who were found in possession of five lion head skulls, which they intended to sell, were yesterday fined for the offence. Shelton Chibaya (36) and Benedict Mutinhima (31) work at Kyle Recreational Park in Masvingo. They appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo and were charged with contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.
