Notes on data, analysis and

This polyline shapefile depicts the extent of the optical fibre network across the country. It essentially follows much of

compilation:

the trunk and main road routes. The shapefile was derived using the roads shapefile (Fig 6.33). The road network

covering the course of the optic fibre network (as provided as a hard copy figure by Telecom) was extracted from the

roads shapefile and generalised. Minor additional sections (e.g. Scorpion mine) were added by digitising tracks off satellite

images (Landsat 7).

Data quality and organisation

Positional Accuracy:

Created from the roads shapefile (Fig 6.33). Should be seen as a schematic representation of the optic fibre line

An ultraphone is a wireless connection to the remote line unit (RLU) network. An ultraphone comprises a fixed receiver

and links to the RLU using radio waves. It has a 60 km working radius but is restricted by line of site. This shapefile

depicts circular (contiguous) polygons of 60 km radius around the locations of ultraphone transmitters across the

country. These buffers were created using Arcview.

Notes on data, analysis and

This point shapefile includes location co-ordinates for the following types of telecom connections:

compilation:

1) DECT: These base stations are the same as ultraphones but only serve a 6km radius

2) Rurtel: This is a local physical line linked to the remote line unit (RLU) by one or more radio connections (e.g. the

area around Oshakati)

3) Digital Local Loop (OFDC & UMC): They are essentially an extension/satellite loop of the remote line units i.e. an

optic fibre loop coming off the RLU. The two types are more or less the same but different ‘makes’

4) Small Digital Exchange (SDE): This is a physical line (copper line) but otherwise is like a RLU. It has limitations in

capability not being optic fibre.

Co-ordinates and locations were provided by Telecom.
