Notes on data, analysis and

Five components were used to derive a measure of potential for tourism, each being converted to a scale of 0 - 100.

compilation:

Altitude range (described separately under 5.35 'relief grid') was used as a proxy for ‘dramatic landscapes’: the range of

altitude in each 10km grid cell was calculated, converted to a 1 km grid, smoothed and converted to a scale of 0 to 100.

Similarly, human population density (Figure 6.1), large herbivore diversity (Figure 4.36), carnivore diversity (Figure

4.46), and bird diversity (Figure 4.14) were converted to 1km grids with values of 0 - 100. These grids were then

summed to give one value per 1 km grid cell. Map units of the grid = km.

value

value obtained from summing 5 grids each with values ranging from

0-100. Hence value range = 0 - 500
