conservation

Notes on data, analysis and

This shapefile was created using government gazettes. Where possible, boundaries were created from co-ordinates

compilation:

provided in the gazettes. Where landmarks were not specific co-ordinates, other shapefiles were used (e.g. farms

shapefile, rivers shapefile, 1:250000 maps etc.). This information is provided as an attribute. The protected areas and

boundaries are correct at the time of publishing. Several amendments to the protected area network are imminent

however and these are indicated in the proposed_protected_area_changes shapefile.

Data quality and organisation

Positional Accuracy:

In most cases very accurate where created entirely from gazette co-ordinates - see attribute table

Notes on data, analysis and

This shapefile depicts one additional protected area and amendments/additions to three existing protected areas.

compilation:

Boundaries are based on existing gazetted boundaries and proposed boundaries from survey diagrams. In one case i.e.

Bwabwata National Park, the exact boundaries of the excluded areas have not yet been surveyed and these are

approximate.

Sperrgebiet

Notes on data, analysis and

This shapefile represents the gazetted boundaries of the Sperrgebiet at the time it was Diamond Area1.The boundaries of

compilation:

the sperrgebiet were created using co-ordinates from the survey diagram for diamond area 1 and the official government

gazette. Note that the area of diamond area 1 falling within the Namib Naukluft Park is excluded from this shapefile.

The coastal section of the sperrgebiet was taken to match that of the definitive boundaries shapefile used in the atlas

(see Fig 1.01). The sperrgebiet area, having been previously an area of exclusion for mining purposes is expected to

become part of one large protected area which will include the Namib Naukluft Park, the

Sperrgebiet and Ai-Ais Hot Springs.

Notes on data, analysis and

Conservancy boundaries on communal land were created from gazetted or proposed co-ordinates and where a boundary is

compilation:

a river, for example, satellite images (landsat 7) were used. Conservancies on freehold land were created using the farm

shapefile (Fig 5.32). New conservancies are forming continually and up to date information should be requested/obtained

from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
