Notes on data, analysis and

Derived from Ministry of Environment and Tourism aerial census data (1998 and 2000) and Ministry of Environment

compilation:

and Tourism farm census data (1998), provided by Colin Craig and Holger Kolberg of DSSS. Aerial census data, with the

number of animals represented by each sighting (based on the sampling frequency), were converted into Thiessen

polygons to obtain density estimates. Densities in areas censused in both years were halved. Farm census data were used

to supplement aerial census data; densities were calculated from the number of animals reported and the farm areas. To

take account of reporting biases, densities calculated from farm census data were adjusted based on areas of overlap

between areas covered by aerial census and farm censuses. The map compiled from these two analyses was then

smoothed, discussed with DSSS staff and amended manually based on field knowledge to produce the final map.
