Abstract:

The renewal of the environmental clearance certificate for the proposed bush thinning activities on farm Gemsbokoord No. 477, Outjo district, Kunene region, Namibia (see Figure 1). Listed activities triggered by the project include: LISTED ACTIVITY EIA SCREENING FINDING FORESTRY ACTIVITIES 4 The clearance of forest areas, deforestation, forestation, timber harvesting or any other related activity that requires authorization in terms of the Forest Act, 2001 (Act No.12 of 2001) or any other law. - The farmer intends to clear approximately 3000 to 4000 hectares to combat encroacher bushes. - Cutting (harvesting) of encroacher tree species. Bush control activities will stay within the boundaries of the farm which will be divided into smaller camps. The total area dedicated to bush thinning activities will cover 4270.4629 ha. - The following harvesting methods will be implemented on the FMU: Manual by means of axe, and semi-mechanised by means of chainsaw LAND USE AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES 5.3 Construction of veterinary protected area or game proof and international boundary fences. - A Game fence was constructed around approximately 2000 ha for security and wildlife purposes prior to the promulgation of the EMA TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES 6. The construction of resorts, lodges, hotels or other tourism and hospitality facilities - The farm is operational and includes tourism activities. - Tourism accommodation facilities include a guesthouse with 5 rooms. INFRASTRUCTURES 10.1 (g) The construction of communication networks including towers, telecommunication, and marine telecommunication - A communication tower (small mast 18 m tall) was constructed prior to the promulgation of the EMA OTHER ACTIVITIES 11.2 Camp sites - A camp site was constructed prior to the promulgation of the EMA 2. Details of the activity(s) covered by the environmental clearance certificate: Title of activity: Bush control and tourism-related activities on farm Gemsbokoord no 477 Outjo district, Kunene region, Namibia. Figure 1 indicates the location of the project site. Nature of activity: Harvesting activities will include the following: - Bush Clearing: The project will involve the cutting (harvesting) of encroacher tree species, with bush control activities confined within the farm boundaries. The total area designated for bush thinning will cover 4270.4629 ha. - Harvesting Methods: The bush clearing will be conducted using two methods: Manual: Utilisation of axes for cutting. Semi-mechanised: Use of chainsaws for more efficient harvesting. The following infrastructure and facilities already form part of the project and have been constructed before the promulgation of the Environmental Management Act (EMA): - Game Fence: A game fence has been erected on the farm for security and wildlife purposes. - Tourism and Accommodation: The farm is operational and offers tourism activities, with accommodation facilities. - Communication Tower: This has been constructed for operational and tourism functions. - Camp Site. Scale and scope of activity: The listed activities will take place within the boundaries of Farm Gemsbokoord.
