Abstract:

Red-billed Buffalo Weaver Bubalornis niger, a common resident in southern and eastern Africa, constructs large-chambered nests of thorny sticks on trees and man-made structures such as windmills and pylons (Vernon and Dean 2005). There are apparently some regional variations in nest-site selection. For example, in Limpopo Province, South Africa, nests are frequently constructed in trees beside roads (Vernon and Dean 2005), whilst in the Omusati and Oshana regions, Namibia, they are usually in palms Hyphaene petersiana (pers. obs.).
